Even though many animals produce wool which is also used for clothing (camels, goats, rabbits) only the sheep is accepted as a wool producer. Wool resembles the human hair. Keratin which is built up from egg white forms fibrils which are arranged in fibre bundles. The advantage of wool is its ability to absorb moisture up to 30% of its own weight and not feel wet. The air in the cavity of the fibres forms an isolating layer which prevents the outside temperature to reach the skin and at the same time retains the body heat. By using high-grade merino wool with dense fibres skin nerves are not irritated. For this reason most people perceive this wool as comfortable. Due to the scaled surface wool can not be prepared in such a way that pilling occurs. Pilling can not be avoided with wool and other fibres of a similar structure and is not a quality defect. Quite the contrary: Pilling brings about an even better isolation. The merino wool has of course been treated against shrinking and can be washed in the washing machine.
